Day 343

Philemon

This is a very interesting, short, compact book. The subject matter is that a slave has escaped a Christian man. The escaped slave has found his way to Paul in Rome and has found Christ. He is now returning under the direction of Paul and the Holy Spirit to make things right with his master. Paul appeals to Philemon to receive the slave back into his home. Slavery is never a good thing. In this book the debate is not over whether slavery is legal, right, or defensible. The book focuses in on not changing the structure of one's circumstances as much as being faithful in whatever circumstance you find yourself. We often try to rebel against situations that are difficult for us, but maybe we need to be faithful in the midst of a bad job, a difficult boss, or a tough school situation so that Christ might be glorified.

Tomorrow's reading: Hebrews 1-2
