Numbers 17-20
This is one of those readings where as you are reading it you hear that impending doom music. Miriam dies, the people argue about not having enough water, and Moses and Aaron appeal to God. God tells them to go and 'speak' to the rock and it would bring forth water for the people. Unfortunately, Moses and Aaron go and 'strike' the rock to get the water. This act of doubt prevented these two men from going into the promised land. How tragic! Certainly they were not punished as much as Korah or Aaron's two sons, but there punishment was nothing short of devastating as well. I am so glad that Jesus came and died for me so that I could live under God's forgiveness always. Although I wonder how many times I have had to turn around from the promised land because I did not trust God enough.
